What We Do

Funding Our Future

Most Nova Scotians – about 90%– never interact with the WCB directly. But for those who do, our work is important. Through the Workers’ Compensation Act, we provide insurance, regardless of who was at fault, for more than 353,000 workers in 20,600 workplaces across the province.

Here’s a snapshot of how we help Nova Scotians.

About 25,000 claims are registered every year. This is all claims, from traumatic psychological injuries to a bad cut that needs stitches, and everything in between. It also includes claims when a Nova Scotian dies at work, or workplace injuries due to an illness contracted through work done in the past.

Of all of the claims registered each year, about 5,000 claims cause three or more days of time lost from work. These are known as “time-loss claims.”

Types of Benefits

If someone is hurt at work, WCB Nova Scotia provides several types of services, depending on the injury. This includes health care benefits, temporary earnings replacement benefits, which are financial benefits paid while a worker recovers, and support for the worker to return to work in a safe and timely manner. We also provide long-term benefits for those workers who are not able to return to work. Tragically, too many Nova Scotians still die at work, or because of work done in the past. If this happens, we support surviving family members and help with final costs.
