In Nova Scotia, WCB Nova Scotia sets the average employer assessment rate. Rates for WCB insurance are much like other insurance rates – those with positive experience pay less than those with poor experience.

Workplaces pay premiums for workers’ compensation insurance, per $100 of assessable payroll. At $2.65 per $100 of assessable payroll in 2024, Nova Scotia’s average rate is among the highest in Canada. This is due in part to Nova Scotia’s high injury rate and the length of time workers are off work after a workplace injury.

Like other insurance, the biggest factor in premiums paid is the cost of claims. What each employer actually pays differs, based upon the costs of their industry and their own individual experience.

With a stronger financial position at WCB Nova Scotia, and to ensure long-term stability and sustainability, WCB’s Board of Directors adopted an Approved Rate Range Framework in 2023 that provides guideposts for when changes can be made responsibly to workplace insurance rates.
