Preventing Back Injury
Back injuries are the most common workplace injury in Nova Scotia and a leading cause of time off work. Protecting your back helps you stay healthy, strong, and on the job.
Whether you work in construction, health care, retail, office, or any other job—simple steps can make a big difference.

Why back safety matters
In 2023, back injuries were the top cause of lost time at work in Nova Scotia.
Most are preventable.
Back injuries often happen when:
- You lift or carry heavy items
- Your workspace isn’t set up properly
- You repeat the same motion over and over
- You twist, bend, or reach in awkward positions
Small changes to how you work, how you move, and how your workplace is set up can help prevent serious pain and injury.
How to protect your back at work
Here are practical things you can do every day:
- Plan the lift before you start—clear the path and know where you’re going
- Keep loads close to your body, between your knees and shoulders
- Use carts, dollies, or mechanical lifts whenever possible
- Avoid twisting—turn your whole body, not just your spine
- Adjust your workspace so you can work at a comfortable height
- Take micro-breaks to stretch and move
- Ask for help with heavy or awkward loads
- Report hazards or concerns early
