Retail industry hand injury

If one of your workers is hurt at work—physically or psychologically—it’s important to act quickly. Prompt action helps protect your worker’s health, minimize time lost, and reduce the impact on your WCB rates. The WCB is here to help and guide you throughout the claims process and will answer any questions you may have along the way.

This page outlines the 5 main steps in the employer claims process. This information applies mainly to physical injuries. Learn about the claims process for psychological injury.

1. What to do if an injury happens

When a workplace injury happens, act quickly to protect your worker’s health, prevent further harm, and start the claims process.

  • Make sure they get first aid and any medical help they need
  • If it’s a sprain or strain injury – tell them to see a WCB approved physiotherapist or chiropractor for an assessment which WCB will cover
  • Fix the hazard that caused the injury – to make sure it doesn’t happen again
  • Talk to your worker about how they can stay at work safely or what changes are needed in their job to return to work right away
  • Report the injury - If the worker missed time from work or needed medical treatment fill out an injury report on WCB MyAccount to open a claim

2. Return to work starts right away

It’s important to start talking about how you can support your worker to keep working, or return-to-work as soon as possible—even before a claim is officially opened. Early discussions about transitional work can help identify duties the worker can safely do while they recover. This keeps them connected to the workplace and supports a faster recovery.

Early and safe return-to-work planning helps ensure the best outcomes for everyone involved—including helping to reduce your claim costs.

3. After a claim is opened

WCB is here to help you and your worker when an injury happens. Once a claim is reported, it’s assigned to a case worker who will support and guide you through the process—and answer any questions you may have.

4. Worker benefits

When a claim is approved, the worker will receive benefits that may include treatment, income support, and other services to help their recovery.

5. Appealing a claim decision

If you disagree with a claim decision, you have the right to appeal.
