WCB administers Nova Scotia’s workers’ compensation system under the Workers’ Compensation Act. We provide no-fault workplace injury insurance coverage that protects both employers and workers. Just like other types of insurance, we pay for peace of mind, and hope to never have a claim, but when workplace injury happens, WCB is here to minimize the impact to employers and workers in Nova Scotia.

Under the law, most employers must register for WCB coverage and pay premiums. We also provide optional coverage for businesses when coverage is not mandatory.

Your WCB rate determines how much you pay for workplace injury insurance coverage. It’s based on:

  • The industry you’re in
  • Your company’s past claims costs
  • Whether your industry has a safety association levy

Invest in safety—get rewarded

WCB supports employers who invest in safety programs and better return-to-work results. Our Safety Certified Program is Nova Scotia’s standard for safety management. Certified employers may qualify for financial incentives and other supports.
