Transitional work: Focusing on what you can do, not what you can’t

Staying at work or getting back to work as soon as possible after an injury can help you get better. As you recover, your support team will help develop a safe work plan that may include transitional work.

What is transitional work?

Transitional or modified work is temporary and allows you to work safely while recovering from your injury. It could be changes made to your regular job tasks. Alternative work is a whole new set of tasks you do until you’re ready to go back to your pre-injury position.

Why is it important?

Staying connected to work helps with your social, mental, and physical health—and your finances, too. It’s about getting you back to being you.

How is it determined?

Your health care provider will assess what job duties you can safely do after your injury - also called a functional assessment. This keeps you from doing too much, too soon. As you recover, your transitional work may change to match your abilities.
