How members are appointed
Board members are appointed by Government. Appointments are made through the Government of Nova Scotia’s Agencies, Boards and Commissions (ABC) Appointment process.
Nominations
Worker representatives
It is encouraged but not required that worker representatives be nominated by the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour (NSFL), designated injured worker associations or other labour organizations.
Employer representatives
- It is encouraged but not required that employer representatives be nominated by groups representing covered employers.
Chair and Deputy Chair
The Chair and Deputy Chair are appointed through the ABC process and recruited through an open competition.
Service terms
- Members serve 4-year terms (with possible reappointment)
- The Chair and Deputy Chair serve 5-year terms and may be reappointed.
- The Chair acts as the Board’s spokesperson. The Deputy Chair supports and steps in when the Chair is unavailable.
What skills are needed?
Directors should bring a variety of skills and experience, such as:
- Understanding the workers’ compensation system and governance
- Balancing the interests of employers and workers
- Overseeing operations, strategy, and performance
- Experience with finance, investment, or accounting (at least one member must have an accounting background)
- Knowledge of risk management, technology, and privacy
- Ability to think strategically and work collaboratively
The board uses a skills and diversity matrix to track collective strengths and plan ongoing training.
Time commitment
- About 1 full-day meeting per month (9 am–4 pm)
- Additional time for reviewing materials
- Committee work (4–5 meetings a year); Committees include:
- Investment
- Finance, Audit and Risk
- Key Performance Indicators
- Development and Succession
- Governance and Policy
Board members generally spend about 3–4 days per month on board duties. Members may also attend training and conferences.
Board member compensation
- Chair: $20,000 per year + $300/day for meetings (max $50,000/year) + expenses
- Deputy Chair: $3,000 per year + $300/day for meetings + expenses (+$2,000 if chairing a committee)
- Members: $300/day for meetings + expenses (+$2,000 if chairing a committee)
