Learn how to get WCB Safety Certified, what the audit covers, and how to choose a provider—plus tips to stay certified and support a safer workplace.
  1. Choose a WCB-approved audit provider View the auditor list to find one that fits your industry.
  2. Schedule your audit Your auditor will guide you through the process, including how to prepare and what they’ll need to see.
  3. Complete the audit The auditor will review your safety system and workplace practices.
  4. Receive your certificate If you meet the standards, you’ll be issued a WCB Safety Certified accreditation.

What is reviewed in the safety audit

The WCB Safety Certified audit checks how well your workplace meets recognized standards in health and safety management. A WCB-approved auditor will assess your system across several areas. These include:

Injury prevention and management

  • Health and safety policies and procedures
  • Clear responsibilities for management and workers
  • Training for workers and supervisors/managers
  • Orientation and on-the-job supervision
  • Regular safety meetings and worker participation
  • Incident reporting, inspections, and hazard assessments
  • Work refusal process
  • Emergency preparedness and safe work practices
  • Employer rules
  • Contractor and subcontractor safety
  • Data review and continuous improvement
  • Maintenance of equipment and facilities
  • Special procedures and permits when required
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE)

Return-to-work processes

To meet the return-to-work component of the audit, your workplace must:

  • Have a clear return-to-work policy that fits your size and industry
  • Have a defined return-to-work program with steps to support injured workers
  • Outline roles and responsibilities for the business owner, supervisors, workers, and others involved in helping a worker return
  • Provide return-to-work training as part of your overall safety program
  • Include ways to measure and evaluate how your RTW program is working

WCB Safety Certified approved auditors

Certification renewal

Most certifications are valid for 1 to 3 years, depending on the provider. To stay certified, contact your audit provider before your certificate expires to begin the renewal process.
