WCB coverage for volunteer firefighters

December 17, 2014 (Halifax, NS) - In Nova Scotia, firefighting is not a “mandatory” industry as set out in the Workers’ Compensation Act (the Act).

However, municipalities with volunteer firefighters can apply for coverage, and many municipalities have this coverage in place.

WCB coverage provides reassurance that should a volunteer firefighter be injured in the course of their duties, they could be eligible to receive workers’ compensation benefits as outlined under the Act.

The Workers’ Compensation Act, and the Firefighters’ Compensation Regulations, also outline presumptive coverage for certain types of cancers.
