Funding Our Future

Getting back to work is part of getting better

The average worker injured at work in Nova Scotia loses more time on the job due to their injury than in any other province. There are a few reasons for that, including social reasons, economic reasons, population health reasons, and service reasons.

When injury happens, our support begins right away – working to support both workers and employers in a safe, healthy return to work. Most of the time, work is part of that recovery.

There has been progress in recent years but there remains much to do.

As the population ages, and as the face of workplace injury changes, the WCB is committed to supporting employers, workers, and their families in better return-to-work outcomes.

Here are some ways we support return to work in Nova Scotia:

  • An Atlantic-wide campaign, focused on the importance of work as part of recovery.
  • Fewer days lost in the long-term care and home care sectors.
  • Refresher professional development for all WCB case workers in return-to-work fundamentals.
  • Updated training for all WCB service providers.
  • The addition of return-to-work as an element in WCB safety certification
  • The creation of Return-to-Work Specialist positions, dedicated to providing earlier support to workers whose injuries and circumstances may put them at a higher risk for prolonged claim durations.

Supporting Traumatic Psychological Injury

A new program to better support workers with traumatic psychological injury in new ways is seeing early success, with return-to-work outcomes significantly better than before the program was introduced.
