Communities of Practice

Building Safer Workplaces Through Shared Leadership

Preventing workplace injuries requires more than compliance. It requires practical knowledge, peer insight, and collaborative problem-solving.

Through the Safer Workplaces Together initiative, employers, workers, and safety partners told us they needed more opportunities to connect, share knowledge, and work collectively on prevention challenges. That's why WCB Nova Scotia and the LSI Safety Branch created Communities of Practice.

What are Communities of Practice?

A Community of Practice (CoP) is an online forum where professionals come together on a particular topic to share what's working, explore emerging trends, identify barriers, and build practical solutions they can bring back to their workplaces. They are collaborative learning spaces for employers and safety officers to share real experience, supported by subject matter experts from WCB, the LSI, and the broader safety community.

Three Communities of Practice in action

Communities of Practice launched in April 2026. There are currently three groups:

Psychological Injuries (Harassment & Workplace Exposures)
This Community of Practice focuses on developing practical prevention guidance, creating tools and learning resources, and sharing best practices from high-risk sectors managing psychological risk.

Musculoskeletal Injuries (MSIs)
Focused on integrating MSI prevention into safety systems, building peer development approaches, and sharing what's working to reduce physical strain and injury.

Frontline Leader Support - Leaders in Action (LIA)
Focused on supervisor-centered prevention, building a frontline leadership framework, and creating a practical resource toolkit for the supervisors who are closest to risk every day.
