About
Janet Hazelton has been the President of the Nova Scotia Nurses' Union (NSNU) since October 2002.
Janet graduated in 1984 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from St. Francis Xavier University, in her hometown of Antigonish. In 1987, she began her career as a union activist and advocate for health care and nursing issues. Her volunteer involvement in the NSNU enabled her to pursue additional education in labour relations.
Janet sits on the National Executive Board of the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions and is the NSNU Trustee for the Nova Scotia Health Employees’ Pension Plan. Janet is a member of the Provincial Nursing Network, and the Executive Council of the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour Health Care Committee.
In 2010, Janet completed her Master of Public Administration degree from Dalhousie University.
In the midst of her many professional commitments, this Truro resident and mother of two is still very active in her community.
“As a leader within health care in Nova Scotia I wanted to become a labour representative on the board in order to help find solutions to the unacceptable number of health care injuries in the system. It's important that labour and employer representatives work together to find solutions so that all Nova Scotians come home from work safe every day.”
