Small businesses are an important part of Nova Scotia’s economy and our communities. This Small Business Week, we’re recognizing the employers and workers who help keep our province running.
At WCB, we’ve changed how we work with employers, focusing more closely on those with the greatest impact on workplace injuries. By building stronger relationships and working together on prevention and recovery, our teams are helping drive progress in reducing time-loss injuries across the province.
Small businesses remain an important part of this work, too. When injuries are rare, it can be hard to know what to do when one happens. Having workplace injury insurance coverage, knowing how to report an injury, and understanding how to support recovery can make a real difference for both the employer and the worker.
In celebration of Small Business Week, we’re highlighting our recent article in the Halifax Chamber of Commerce’s Business Voice magazine. The story features Angie Daniels-Drummond, executive director of Dartmouth Day Care Centre, and Matt Ross, WCB Nova Scotia’s director of employer performance. They share why workplace safety matters, how employers can prepare for an injury and what it takes to support recovery.
“Safety is less about paperwork and more about recognizing hazards before someone gets hurt,” says Ross. When it comes to supporting recovery, “it’s really about knowing who will stay connected with the worker, understanding reporting requirements, identifying modified duties that can be offered, and keeping a record of conversations along the way.”
From recognizing hazards and building everyday safety habits to understanding coverage and knowing what to do when an injury happens, small steps can help employers be ready when it counts.
