Permanent Impairment
Permanent Medical Impairment (PMI)
In some cases, a workplace injury may result in a lasting loss of function that persists even after treatment has been completed. If your case worker refers you for a Permanent Medical Impairment (PMI) assessment, an independent medical examiner will evaluate whether your injury has caused a permanent impairment. Pain-Related Impairment (PRI)
It's rare, however some workplace injuries lead to ongoing chronic pain that continues after the original injury has healed. If your case worker refers you for a Pain-Related Impairment (PRI) assessment, it's assessed separately from PMI, using its own criteria. Learn more about chronic pain and PRI assessments.
Financial Benefits
Following your workplace injury or illness, you may have received short-term financial support called a Temporary Earnings Replacement Benefit (TERB). If your injury has a permanent impact on your life and ability to work, we support workers with long-term financial benefits. Reviews happen when you are receiving EERB Benefits

Medical coverage and other benefits

Appealing a decision about long-term benefits
You have the right to appeal decisions made about long-term benefits. Such as:
- Your permanent impairment rating or Permanent Impairment Benefit (PIB)
- If you are entitled to receive an earnings loss benefit, such as EERB
- Specific medical treatments and medical coverage
- Decisions about benefits for survivors
