Retail in Nova Scotia

Retail industry hand injury

Nova Scotia relies on retail.

Retail plays a major role in our economy, employing the second largest number of workers in Nova Scotia. Every day, over 30,000 people go to work in locally-owned shops, major retail chains and large, big-box stores.

It’s all too easy to be run off your feet in retail. And that’s when accidents can happen. Especially to younger retail workers. Moving heavy bags. Cutting open a box. Standing on a ladder.

“More workers under 25 are hurt in retail than in any other industry.”

On-the-job injuries

Nova Scotia’s retail industry had over 500 time loss claims in 2024. Sprains and strains are the top injury in retail, accounting for almost half of all claims. Approximately 20% were due to slips, trips and falls. And another 15% were claims related to contact injuries.

Sell your staff on safety

Make safety first in your retail operation. Take the time to educate workers on the job hazards. For example, put these best practices to work before your staff lift heavy or bulky objects.

  • Assess the load first: Check size, shape, weight, and stability.
  • Use a proper stance: Feet shoulder-width apart, one foot slightly forward.
  • Lift with your legs, not your back. Keep the back straight and bend at the knees.
  • Keep the load close to your body—don’t reach or twist.
  • Pivot with your feet, not your torso.
  • Get help or use equipment for anything heavy, awkward, or unstable.

Everyone has a role to play in creating a safe working environment. Use this helpful OH&S Risk Mapping Tool for injury prevention to identify and lessen risks.
